Open Call Submissions

March 31, 2024

I wrapped up a few new pieces for two open calls for entry this past week, one specifically with an urban theme. I was able to utilize some of the photopraphs that I had taken during our most recent visit to New Orleans.

I also finished up a fourth piece for a separate submission.

Starting with a salvaged piece of shipping crate, random book pages were collaged, covering the majority of the panel. Two light layers of two diffeent colors of paint were then rolled on then sanded down. A grid was layed out using a chalk line (with the gracious help of my lovely wife). I had carved the letters out of blank rubber stamp, then printed each letter by hand on the grid for a total of 400 letters. I have refrained from creating any work that has political connotations, mostly because a lot of political art is a little too obvious for my taste. This is my way of not being completely obvious, but as words are found … you get the idea. There are 43 words/phrases hidden in the puzzle, plus a few unintentional bonus words. I won’t publish a complete list however, one will be attached to the back of the piece.
